That tells you it gets in, which is a different claim from saying it grows hair. The trial that
gets quoted in caffeine's favour was open label, funded by a caffeine shampoo manufacturer, measured
an anagen ratio off a trichogram instead of counting hairs, and tested a leave-on liquid applied
twice a day. It is weak evidence, and none of it carries across to a wash.

Rosemary extract rests on one small human trial from 2015, which has been
carried a great deal further than it can bear. It was small, only loosely blinded, has not been
repeated, and it ran on a leave-on rosemary oil used daily for six months. That is a different
product in a different format from an extract you rinse out two minutes later. The evidence for
rosemary is thin next to what exists for minoxidil, and whatever there is of it belongs to the oil.
Rosemary is here because it is pleasant on the scalp and because it is the ingredient people come
looking for.

Onion bulb extract traces back to a small 2002 study in which crude onion juice
was applied to patches of alopecia areata, which is an autoimmune condition and a different problem
from pattern thinning. It was raw juice rather than a cosmetic extract, and it has not been
replicated in men with androgenetic hair loss. Onion is genuinely rich in quercetin and in sulphur
compounds, and the honest position is that nobody has shown this does anything for thinning hair.

Panthenol, or pro-vitamin B5, is the ingredient doing the most reliable work
here, and what it does is cosmetic. There is also imaging work showing that caffeine from a shampoo, massaged in for two
minutes and rinsed out, does reach the follicle and stays detectable there for up to a day. That
demonstrates delivery, and delivery is not the same as an effect.

You will see caffeine sold on the back of one human trial, which reported a 0.2% caffeine liquid
as non-inferior to 5% minoxidil solution over six months. Nobody should read the word DHT on this bottle and understand it as finasteride
in another format.

Niacinamide at 1% is the ingredient here with the least argument attached to it. That study was
open-label, it was funded by the manufacturer of the product being tested, and it set caffeine
against minoxidil as a substitute for it. That design does not make caffeine a replacement for
minoxidil, and nothing on this page should be read that way. What is better established for a
shampoo specifically is delivery: caffeine massaged in for two minutes and rinsed off has been
measured reaching the follicle and staying detectable there for around a day. That is laboratory
work on isolated follicles in controlled conditions, which is a long way from a scalp in a shower,
and a large share of the human research on caffeine for hair is authored or funded by the company
that sells a caffeine shampoo. The one thing that has been measured directly in a rinse-off formula
is delivery: caffeine massaged in for a couple of minutes and rinsed out was still measurable inside
the follicle afterwards. Piroctone olamine suppresses that yeast. It is a
long-established cosmetic anti-dandruff ingredient in Europe, where the rules cap it at 1% in a
rinse-off product like this one, and in the handful of head-to-head comparisons that exist it
performs broadly in line with zinc pyrithione. In 2002, 126 people used a 5%
tea tree oil shampoo daily for four weeks and improved by around 41% on a dandruff severity score
against 11% on placebo. That is one single-blind, four-week study at a concentration far
higher than any pleasant-smelling cosmetic shampoo carries, so treat tea tree here as a supporting
ingredient rather than the reason the product works. It sits in a hair loss range for a practical reason: a flaking, itchy scalp is one
of the most common complaints among men using a topical treatment, and the usual response, washing
harder and more often, tends to make it worse. The dermatology evidence here sits at the
level of ingredient classes rather than finished products: classic alkaline soaps have been shown to thin
the stratum corneum and strip its intercellular lipids, while synthetic detergents built at skin pH leave
both largely intact. That is the reasoning behind this base, and it is a statement about a class of
ingredients rather than a tested property of this bottle.

The second half of the formula is an anti-dandruff active. The standard account of dandruff is that a
yeast called Malassezia, which lives on more or less every scalp, feeds on scalp oils, and in people who
flake the skin reacts to the by-products of that feeding. Anti-dandruff actives work by holding that
population down. As a group they are among the better evidenced ingredients in hair care, with real
controlled trials behind them, but the evidence is specifically for flaking and itch. None of them does
anything for hair growth, and a shampoo that implies otherwise is overselling itself.

Why it belongs here

Two kinds of men get the most out of this. The limit is worth stating plainly, because neither
shampoo keeps hair on your head. What a comfortable scalp does is keep the routine going. Keratin is the structural protein the hair shaft is made of,
and a whole keratin molecule is far too large to do anything useful on the outside of a hair.
Hydrolysis cuts it into short peptides and free amino acids small enough to stick to the cuticle
and, where the cuticle is already lifted and porous, to settle into the gaps. That is the entire meaning of
"repair" on this label. Hair is dead keratinised tissue with no blood supply and no ability to heal
itself, so nothing you rinse through it rebuilds anything. The peptides fill and smooth, which
lowers porosity, cuts the friction of combing and towel drying, and makes the fibre behave as
though it were less damaged until a few washes take the deposit away.

Be clear about what kind of evidence sits behind that. The supporting work for hydrolysed
proteins is mostly instrumental and mostly done in-house by the companies that sell the raw
material: combing force, tensile strength and breakage counts measured on hair tresses in a
laboratory. Those are real measurements on real hair. They are also not clinical trials on people,
and much of the work was run by an interested party. So take the effect seriously at the level of
how hair feels, combs and holds together, and treat it as unsupported at any level beyond that.

The conditioning base underneath the protein does more of the visible work than the protein
does. The test is how your hair behaves when it is dry and untreated: if
it feels rough to the hand, tangles at the back of the head, splits at the ends and snaps when you
comb it, protein is likely to help. Damage of that kind is often self-inflicted by a hair loss
routine, and bleach gets more of the blame than it deserves. Washing daily to keep a treated scalp
clean, alcohol-based topicals wicking down the shaft, and towel drying twice a day all roughen the
mid-lengths, and the mid-lengths are the oldest hair on your head.

If your hair is fine and undamaged, this is the wrong bottle, because protein on hair that does
not need it reads as stiff and straw-like.
