chebe-conditioner
Chebe Strengthening Conditioner

A rinse-out conditioner built around a chebe powder blend, the Chadian hair
preparation traditionally worked through the lengths and left in place for days at a time. Nothing
in this bottle regrows hair, and no conditioner will. Hair that snaps halfway down the shaft is
gone as surely as hair that came out at the root, and breakage is the part of the problem a
conditioner can genuinely reach.

What is in it

Chebe is a traditional preparation associated with the Basara women of Chad, usually built on
croton seed, mahlab cherry seed, cloves and a local resin, all ground fine and mixed with oil or
butter. Here that blend sits in a sulfate free, vegan conditioner base, so it rinses out after a
few minutes instead of staying on the hair for a week.

It is worth being straight about the evidence, because there is very little of it. No controlled
clinical trial on chebe exists. What circulates online is observation of women in Chad who wear
their hair very long, plus a large volume of testimonial, and neither of those tells you what the
powder itself is doing. The plausible mechanism is mechanical and fairly ordinary. A coating of
oils, plant material and conditioning agents on the outside of the hair lays the cuticle flat, adds
slip and lowers the friction of combing, washing and drying, so fewer strands break. That is a
cosmetic effect on the fibre you already have, and it says nothing at all about the follicle
underneath. Anyone telling you chebe makes hair grow faster has gone past the evidence. Growth rate
is set at the root, at roughly a centimetre a month, and no conditioner changes it.

Why it belongs here

Men on treatment handle their hair far more than they used to. There is a twice daily topical
going onto the scalp, more frequent washing to clear residue, dermarolling, and often a bit of
anxious inspecting in the mirror. The alcohol in
Minoxidil Topical Solution USP, 5% dries the
hair shaft along with the scalp, and hair that is miniaturising is finer and more fragile before
any of that starts. Length retention matters most if you wear enough length for it to show, and if
your hair is coarse, coily or tightly curled, since those textures break sooner than straight hair
does. If you keep a short crop, this will do very little for you, and you can skip it.

It follows any shampoo in the range. It is the natural partner to
Deep Cleanse Shampoo, which is deliberately stripping
in order to clear product residue off the scalp and leaves the lengths wanting something back. If
your damage comes from bleach, heat or colour rather than everyday handling,
Repair Protein Conditioner is the better choice.
If what you actually want at conditioner stage is caffeine on the scalp, that is
Caffeine Conditioner instead.

How to use it

Every wash, which for most men is two or three times a week.

Shampoo and rinse out completely first, then squeeze the water out of your hair with your
hands so it is damp rather than dripping. Conditioner applied to soaking hair mostly slides
    straight down the drain.

Warm a ten pence sized amount, roughly 3 to 5 mL, between your palms. Take less if your hair
is short or fine, and a second helping only if the ends still feel rough.

Work it through the mid lengths and the ends, where the hair is oldest and most damaged.

Keep it off the scalp. The traditional preparation is kept off the scalp as well, and here it
matters more, because the scalp is where your treatment goes and a film of oils and plant
powder is the last thing you want sitting on it.

Leave it for two to three minutes, no longer. It has done what it is going to do by then.

Rinse with cool water until the hair feels smooth rather than coated.

Press the water out with a towel instead of rubbing, then detangle with a wide tooth comb
starting at the ends and working upwards. More hair snaps during that minute than during the
    entire wash.

Order matters if you use minoxidil. Wash and condition first, let your hair and
scalp dry completely, then apply your dose. Applying minoxidil and washing it off a couple of hours
later throws the dose away, which is why the label asks for four hours clear.

What to expect

The change in feel is immediate, and it is the part of this product you can rely on. From the
first wash there is less drag through a comb, less roughness at the ends and a little more weight
and shine. Reduced breakage is slower and much quieter to notice. It shows up as ends that stay
even and length that stops stalling at the same point, over something like two to three months of
consistent use. You will not see new hair, more density at the crown or any change to a receding
hairline from a conditioner. If that is what you are after, minoxidil is the only ingredient in
this range with strong regrowth evidence behind it.

Warnings

For external use only. Avoid the eye area and rinse with plenty of water if it gets in. Chebe
blends contain clove and other botanical material, which sit among the more common contact
allergens, so patch test a small amount on the inner forearm and leave it 24 hours before first use
if your skin is reactive or you have a known plant or fragrance allergy. Do not apply it to a
scalp that is broken, inflamed or freshly dermarolled, and leave 24 hours after rolling before you
wash and condition. Stop using it if you develop irritation, itching or a rash. On fine hair,
applying too much or too often can leave a dull residue that needs a clarifying wash to remove.
This is a cosmetic conditioner. It is not a medicine and it does not treat, prevent or cure hair
loss.
