About this product
A sulfate free daily shampoo carrying the same chebe powder blend as its conditioner. Washing is one of the roughest things most men do to their hair in a given week, and a wash that cleans without stripping leaves less damage behind for anything applied afterwards to make up. The claim here is length retention, which is a cosmetic one. Chebe has no effect on the follicle and this bottle will not put hair back on a receding hairline.
What is in it
The chebe blend is the same preparation used through the rest of the pair, ground croton and mahlab seed with cloves and resin, held here in a mild wash base instead of an oil or a butter. The base is sulfate free and vegan, 250 mL. Leaving sulfates out matters more in a shampoo than in anything else you put on your hair, since they are what lifts the cuticle and leaves the fibre swollen, rough and easy to snap while it is still wet.
On the powder itself, keep your expectations low. The tradition belongs to the Basara women of Chad, who pack it into the lengths and leave it for days at a time, and the length they carry is real. What is missing is any trial, any measurement of follicle activity, any evidence at all that the powder does something at the root. The mechanism that holds up is mechanical and unremarkable. Plant oils and finely milled botanicals coat the outside of the shaft, the cuticle lies flatter and combing drags less, so fewer strands give way. In a shampoo, which is on your head for a minute and then gone, even that effect is smaller than it is in a leave on or a rinse out. Most of what this does for you comes from what the base leaves out.
Why it belongs here
It was ranged for a plain reason. The Chebe Strengthening Conditioner has been sitting in this range without a wash to go in front of it, and a conditioner is doing repair work that the wrong shampoo undoes two minutes earlier at the same basin. The two are formulated to the same blend and priced to be bought together, and if you use one of them the case for the other is straightforward.
Beyond that, men on treatment wash more often than they used to, usually to clear topical residue before the next dose, and frequent washing with a harsh surfactant is where breakage quietly compounds. Hair that is miniaturising under Minoxidil Topical Solution USP, 5% is finer and more fragile to begin with. If your hair is coarse, coily or tightly curled, or if you wear enough length for a broken end to show, this is worth the swap. If you keep it cropped short, breakage is not the thing standing between you and more hair, and your money is better spent elsewhere. If what you want from the shampoo step is a scalp active rather than a fibre coating, look at Caffeine Growth Shampoo or Saw Palmetto Shampoo. For damage from bleach, heat or colour, Repair Protein Mask is the better tool.
How to use it
Every wash, which for most men is two or three times a week.
- Soak the hair properly under warm water for a good thirty seconds before the shampoo goes near it. A fair amount of sweat and residue leaves with water alone, and hair that is only half wet takes twice the product.
- Take roughly 5 to 10 mL, about a two pence sized pool, and rub it between your palms until it loosens before it touches your head. Neat shampoo dropped straight onto dry patches cleans unevenly.
- Work it into the scalp with the pads of your fingers for thirty to sixty seconds. Keep your nails out of it, particularly if you dermaroll.
- Let the lather run down through the lengths on its own and leave it at that. Scrubbing the mid lengths and ends is where a lot of avoidable breakage comes from.
- Rinse for longer than feels necessary, until the hair squeaks slightly and feels clean rather than coated.
- Follow with the conditioner on the mid lengths and ends, then press the water out with a towel and detangle with a wide tooth comb from the ends upwards.
- If you use a topical, wash and let your hair and scalp dry completely before the next dose.
The common mistake is leaving it on. Chebe traditionally stays in the hair for days, and people carry that habit across and let the shampoo sit for ten or fifteen minutes expecting more from it. A surfactant held against the scalp that long only dries it out, which is the opposite of what you want on skin already under treatment.
What to expect
The difference in feel arrives at the first wash. Hair comes out of the shower less stripped, wet combing pulls less and the ends feel softer under a towel. The breakage side is slower and much harder to see happening. It shows as ends that stay level and length that stops stalling at the same point every few months, over roughly eight to twelve weeks of consistent use. One thing it will not change is the hair you find in the drain. Those strands came out at the root, and no shampoo reaches that. For density, a receding hairline or genuine regrowth, Minoxidil Topical Foam 5% is the only thing in this range with strong evidence behind it.
Warnings
For external use only. Keep it out of the eyes and rinse with plenty of water if it gets in. Chebe blends contain clove and other botanical material that sit among the more common contact allergens, so if your skin is reactive or you have a known plant or fragrance allergy, patch test on the inner forearm and wait 24 hours before the first wash. Do not use it on a scalp that is broken, inflamed or freshly rolled, and leave 24 hours after using the Dermaroller 0.5 mm before you wash. Stop using it if you develop irritation, itching or a rash. This is a cosmetic shampoo. It is a wash, and it does not treat, prevent or cure hair loss. Keep out of reach of children.
