About this product
A caffeine and biotin shampoo for fine or thinning hair, in a 250 mL bottle. A shampoo is a rinse-off product, so the honest job it does in a hair loss range is to keep the scalp clean, leave the hair with more body once it is dry, and give whatever you apply afterwards a clean surface to sit on. It supports the treatments in this range rather than replacing any of them.
What is in it
Caffeine. In isolated human follicles kept alive in a dish, caffeine counteracts the growth suppression caused by testosterone, and it raises IGF-1 while lowering TGF-beta2, both of which are involved in keeping a follicle in its growing phase. That work is ex vivo, done at concentrations well below what a cosmetic uses, and it has never been shown to translate into hair on a head. There is also imaging work showing that caffeine from a shampoo, massaged in for two minutes and rinsed out, does reach the follicle and stays detectable there for up to a day. That demonstrates delivery, and delivery is not the same as an effect.
You will see caffeine sold on the back of one human trial, which reported a 0.2% caffeine liquid as non-inferior to 5% minoxidil solution over six months. It is worth knowing what that trial actually was. It was a leave-on liquid applied at 2 mL twice a day, it was open-label by design, it was funded by the company that sells a caffeine shampoo, with a company employee among the authors, and it was judged on the proportion of hairs in the growing phase rather than on hair counts or photographs. It also tested caffeine instead of minoxidil, so it says nothing about using both. None of it makes caffeine an equivalent to minoxidil, and none of it transfers to a shampoo you rinse down the drain. Caffeine on the scalp remains an unproven ingredient for growth, and minoxidil remains the proven one.
Biotin. Biotin is a B vitamin, and it helps hair only in people who are genuinely deficient, which is uncommon on an ordinary diet. The one adequately controlled trial of biotin for hair, double-blind and placebo-controlled, found no difference in hair growth. In a shampoo, biotin behaves as a conditioning ingredient, and that is how it is worth thinking about here.
The word growth in the name describes the shelf this product sits on. The claim that survives scrutiny is narrower, and it is about how hair looks and behaves once it is properly clean.
Why it belongs here
This is for men with fine or thinning hair who want a daily wash that cleans the scalp without leaving hair flat or coated. Build-up from sebum, styling product and hard water is the most underrated cause of hair looking thinner than it is, and a clean scalp is also the surface a topical treatment works from.
It is built to run with the Caffeine Growth Conditioner, which is the same pairing on the lengths. If you want caffeine on your scalp with real contact time behind it, the Caffeine Scalp Serum is the leave-on version, which is the only sensible way to use the ingredient. If your actual goal is regrowth, Minoxidil Topical Solution USP, 5% is the only thing in this range with strong evidence behind it, and nothing on this page substitutes for it. If flaking or itch is the problem you are trying to solve, the Anti-Dandruff Shampoo is the right wash instead of this one, and if you use heavy styling products or scalp oils, the Deep Cleanse Scalp Shampoo once a week clears what a daily wash leaves behind.
How to use it
Daily use is fine. Most men will use it three or four times a week, on whichever days they already wash.
- Wet your hair thoroughly with warm water. Hot water leaves the scalp tight and itchy.
- Take about 5 mL, roughly the size of a ten pence piece, into a wet palm. Use twice that only if your hair is past your collar.
- Work it into the scalp with your fingertips, not your nails, and keep going for a full two minutes. Two minutes is the contact time used in the follicle penetration work, and it is far longer than most people spend.
- Leave the lengths alone. The lather running down them as you rinse is enough for hair that is fine to begin with.
- Rinse until the water runs completely clear. Surfactant left behind is a common cause of an itchy scalp that then gets blamed on the treatment.
- Follow with the Caffeine Growth Conditioner on the mid-lengths and ends, keeping it off the scalp.
Order matters if you use a topical. Wash your hair first, dry the scalp completely, then apply the treatment. Washing within four hours of applying minoxidil throws that dose away, which is the most expensive mistake in this whole routine. If a 250 mL bottle is gone in a fortnight, you are using far more per wash than the scalp can make use of.
What to expect
The effect is cosmetic and it arrives on the first wash. Hair that is clean and free of build-up sits with more volume and looks denser at the root, and that is what this product does on day one and on day ninety alike. There is no month at which something else appears. It will not regrow hair, and there is no reliable evidence that it slows shedding.
If you are counting hairs in the sink, look at what you leave on the scalp rather than at what you rinse off it. A shampoo is the easiest part of a routine to change and the least likely to change anything.
Warnings
For external use only. Keep it out of your eyes, and rinse with plenty of water if it gets in. If you react easily to fragrances or surfactants, patch test a little on the inner forearm and leave it a day before washing your hair with it. Stop using it if your scalp becomes red, itchy or sore, and do not start it on a scalp that is already broken or inflamed.
This is a cosmetic product rather than a medicine. It is not intended to treat, cure or prevent hair loss, and hair loss that is sudden, patchy or rapid needs a doctor, not a new shampoo. The biotin here is topical and rinsed away, so the blood-test interference that matters with oral biotin does not apply to this product. If you also take the Biotin Gummies, that warning does apply, so tell whoever takes your blood.
Keep out of reach of children. Store closed, at room temperature, away from direct sunlight.
