About this product
A sulfate-free daily shampoo with rosemary, mint, biotin, caffeine and niacinamide. Its job in this range is a modest one, which is to clean a scalp that is being dosed with a drying topical every day, without stripping it further. The actives on the front of the bottle are real ingredients, the evidence behind them is thin next to minoxidil, and almost all of what exists was gathered on leave-on formulas rather than on something you rinse down the drain after two minutes.
What is in it
A mild sulfate-free surfactant base does the actual cleaning. That is the part of this formula that matters most, because harsh detergents on a scalp already carrying alcohol and propylene glycol twice a day is what produces the tight, flaky feeling most men blame on the treatment itself.
Caffeine has the most interesting delivery evidence of the five. Laser scanning microscopy work in Berlin showed that caffeine from a shampoo massaged in for two minutes and then rinsed off still penetrates the follicle and stays detectable there for up to twenty-four hours. That establishes that it gets in, and it says nothing about what it does once it is there. The follicle culture work, where caffeine counteracts testosterone-induced suppression of hair shaft growth, is ex vivo and at concentrations far below cosmetic levels. The one human trial people quote used a 0.2% leave-on liquid applied twice a day, it was open-label by design, and it was funded by the shampoo manufacturer whose researchers also wrote the mechanism review. A rinse-off wash is a long way from that.
Rosemary rests on a single small 2015 trial that compared a rosemary oil with 2% minoxidil over six months and reported no statistically significant difference between the two groups. A one-off study of that size, with no placebo arm and run against half the minoxidil strength we sell, cannot establish that the two perform alike, and nobody has repeated it since. That trial also used an oil left sitting on the scalp for months, whereas our rosemary is at cosmetic level in a wash that goes down the drain. Treat it as unproven.
Biotin is here because customers look for it. A 2017 review in Skin Appendage Disorders put it bluntly, concluding that "biotin has no proven efficacy in hair and nail growth of healthy individuals", and a 2024 review found only one adequate-quality trial, which was placebo-controlled and showed no difference. Biotin helps people who are genuinely deficient, and deficiency is uncommon on a normal diet. On the scalp it behaves as a mild conditioning ingredient and nothing more.
Niacinamide is a well-tolerated form of vitamin B3 with a long record in skin care for barrier comfort. The evidence for it changing hair density is thin. Mint gives the cooling sensation as you wash. That tingle is a sensory cue rather than evidence of anything happening in the follicle, and it is worth being clear about, because the tingle is exactly what most shampoos in this category are selling.
Why it belongs here
This is the daily wash for men who are already treating hair loss properly and want the shower step to stop working against them. Nothing here regrows hair. The regrowth in this range comes from Minoxidil Topical Solution USP, 5%, and a shampoo is the supporting act. Where it genuinely earns its place is in the two to six week window when a topical starts drying the scalp out, since that discomfort is the most common reason men quit before the treatment has had time to work.
If you want rosemary at a concentration that stays on the scalp long enough to matter, use the Rosemary Hair Growth Oil as a weekly treatment and wash it out with this. If your problem is visible flaking or a persistently itchy scalp, this shampoo is not medicated and will not fix it, so use the Anti-Dandruff Shampoo twice a week instead and keep this for the other days.
How to use it
Daily, or as often as you normally wash your hair.
- Wet your hair thoroughly with lukewarm water. Hot water is the fastest way to undo the point of a gentle wash.
- Dispense a coin-sized amount, roughly 5 mL, into your palm. Use a second pump only if your hair is long enough to need it.
- Work it into the scalp with your fingertips for about a minute, concentrating on the skin rather than the lengths. Use the pads of your fingers, never your nails.
- Leave it on for two minutes. That is the contact time used in the follicular penetration work, and rinsing straight away wastes whatever the actives are going to do.
- Rinse until the water runs clear, then condition the mid-lengths and ends if you use one.
The timing around your topical is the thing people get wrong. Leave at least four hours between a minoxidil dose and a wash, otherwise you rinse the dose away before it has absorbed. Wash first, dry the scalp completely, then apply the topical to dry skin. If you use the Dermaroller, wash before you roll rather than after, since mint on freshly needled skin stings.
What to expect
Everything this shampoo does, it does immediately and cosmetically. The scalp feels clean and cool, hair sits with more body at the root because a mild wash leaves less residue behind, and if a topical has been leaving you tight and itchy, a week or two of switching usually settles it. There is no density change coming at month three, and you should not wait for one.
Losing fifty to a hundred hairs a day is normal, and seeing them in the shower is simply where you notice them. Changing shampoo neither causes that nor stops it. If you have started minoxidil in the last few weeks and shedding has increased, that is usually the normal early shedding phase minoxidil goes through, and switching washes will not change it. If it carries on past a few months, speak to a doctor.
Warnings
For external use only. Avoid contact with the eyes, and rinse with plenty of water if it happens. Do not use it on a scalp that is broken, raw, sunburnt or freshly microneedled, since the mint will sting. If you have a reactive scalp, test it on a small patch behind the ear for a couple of days before washing with it. Stop using it if you develop redness, itching or a rash that does not settle, and see a doctor if it persists.
This is a cosmetic product rather than a medicine. It is not a treatment for dandruff, seborrhoeic dermatitis, psoriasis or any diagnosed scalp condition, and it does not treat, cure or prevent hair loss. The biotin in it is topical and rinsed off, so it does not carry the blood-test interference that high-dose oral biotin does. If you take the Biotin Gummies, that warning applies there and is worth reading before any blood draw. Keep out of reach of children.
