Smoothing Hair Mask

A conditioning complex, which is the cosmetic term for a blend of cationic conditioning agents and emollients that deposit a thin film along the hair shaft when you rinse. That film lies down the cuticle scales, cuts the friction between one hair and the next, and lowers the force needed to pull a comb through. The result is slip, softness and less frizz, and it is a change to the outside of a dead fibre rather than anything happening in the follicle. This is well understood cosmetic chemistry, so the honest framing is that the benefit is real and entirely about feel, appearance and handling. It is lightly fragranced, which is worth knowing if your scalp is already sensitive from a topical treatment.

Men treating hair loss tend to wash more often than they used to, because a twice daily topical leaves residue and because an itchy scalp invites another shampoo. Frequent washing strips the natural oil that keeps mid-lengths and ends pliable, and dry hair snaps rather than bends. Once a week, on a wash day, in place of your usual conditioner.

1. Shampoo as normal, then squeeze the water out of your hair until it stops dripping. Soaking wet hair dilutes the mask and it will simply run off.
2. Scoop about a tablespoon, roughly 15 mL, with clean fingers. Use two for hair past the collar. The jar holds around twenty applications at that rate.
3. Warm it between your palms and work it through the mid-lengths and the ends. Keep it off the scalp itself.
4. Comb it through with a wide-toothed comb so it reaches every strand.
5. Leave it for five to ten minutes. Longer adds nothing, because the hair takes up what it can take up within a few minutes.
6. Rinse thoroughly with cool water, until your hair no longer feels slippery.

The common mistake is putting it on the roots. On fine or thinning hair a conditioning film at the root is what makes hair lie flat and look thinner than it is, and if you use a scalp topical, a layer of conditioner on the skin is the last thing you want underneath it. Wash and treat first, dry your hair completely, then apply your Minoxidil Topical Solution.

The effect is immediate and cosmetic. You will feel it while you rinse and see it once your hair dries, and it lasts until the next wash or two. Nothing builds up over months and there is no timeline to wait through.
