About this product
A conditioner with caffeine and biotin, built to follow the Caffeine Growth Shampoo on fine or thinning hair. What it does is cosmetic. It smooths the cuticle so hair combs through without tearing, and when you have less hair than you used to, hanging on to the length you already have is worth the two minutes it takes.
What is in it
The conditioning base does the visible work. It coats the hair shaft, lays the cuticle flat and cuts the friction of combing and towel drying, which is where fine hair usually breaks. That effect is real and you feel it the same day, and it is the honest reason to buy a conditioner.
Caffeine is the ingredient people buy this category for, so it is worth being precise about it. The laboratory findings are real and they are also narrow. In cultured human scalp follicles, caffeine counteracted the growth suppression caused by testosterone and appeared to raise IGF-1 and lower TGF-beta2. That work was done in cell culture, at concentrations chosen to suit the culture, and a good deal of the review literature built on top of it was written by employees of a shampoo manufacturer. Caffeine does reach the follicle quickly from a rinse-off product and can still be detected there around a day later, which tells you the delivery works and tells you nothing about whether hair grows. The human trials that exist are small, largely funded by manufacturers, and mostly ran caffeine as a leave-on solution applied twice a day rather than as a conditioner you rinse out after two minutes. Treat caffeine here as plausible and unproven, and a long way behind Minoxidil Topical Solution USP, 5%, which is the only ingredient in this range with strong regrowth evidence behind it.
Biotin is here for the feel of the fibre. Oral biotin only helps people who are genuinely deficient, and the controlled evidence in people who are not deficient shows no benefit to hair growth. Applied to the hair shaft it behaves as a conditioning agent, and we make no growth claim for it.
Why it belongs here
Most shampoos aimed at thinning hair lean towards cleansing, and a scalp routine involving daily washing, scrub steps and alcohol-based topicals leaves the mid-lengths rough. Those mid-lengths are the oldest hair on your head and the first thing to snap. Losing length to breakage looks identical in the mirror to losing hair at the follicle, and it is far easier to fix. This is the conditioner for men with fine or thinning hair who want body without weight. If your hair is bleached, heat-damaged or chemically treated, the Repair Protein Conditioner is the stronger choice, and if breakage is about length retention on coarse or textured hair, look at the Chebe Strengthening Conditioner instead.
How to use it
Use it after every wash, which for most people means three to seven times a week.
- Squeeze the excess water out of your hair first. Conditioner applied to soaking hair mostly runs down the drain.
- Use a coin-sized amount, roughly 5 mL, for short hair, and about double that if your hair is past the ears. A 250 mL bottle covers roughly two months of daily washing at that rate.
- Work it through the mid-lengths and ends. Keep it off the roots and the scalp, because that is what flattens fine hair.
- Comb it through with your fingers or a wide-tooth comb while it is on, which is the point at which it protects against breakage.
- Leave it for one to two minutes.
- Rinse thoroughly with cool water until the hair no longer feels slippery.
If you use a topical treatment, wash and condition first. Dry your scalp completely, then apply the topical. Applying minoxidil and then washing it out a few hours later throws the dose away, and a wet scalp spreads it around instead of leaving it where you put it.
What to expect
The change in how your hair feels happens on the first wash. Combing gets easier straight away and the ends look less ragged. Less breakage over six to eight weeks means you keep more length, which reads as more density even though the number of hairs on your head has not changed. That is the whole of it. This is a cosmetic product, it will not regrow hair, and it does not alter the course of pattern hair loss. If regrowth is what you are after, that job belongs to the minoxidil in this range and this conditioner simply sits alongside it.
Warnings
For external use only. Avoid contact with the eyes, and rinse with water if it happens. Do not use it on a scalp that is broken, inflamed or sore. If you react easily to hair products, test a small amount behind the ear and leave it a day before using it properly. Stop using it if you develop itching, redness or a rash. Keep out of reach of children.
