About this product

A fine walnut shell polish for the face, meant for twice a week at most. Most men reach for a scrub because they can see flaking along the hairline and the forehead, so it is worth saying at the top that if that flaking started after you began a twice-daily topical, a scrub is the wrong tool and will leave the skin worse than it found it. This is for ordinary rough, dull or congested skin, and it does nothing at all for your hair.

What is in it

Walnut shell powder is the only ingredient here doing any work, and it works mechanically rather than chemically. Ground shell is hard and its fragments are irregular, which is the basis of the long-standing dermatological objection to nut-shell scrubs, that coarse particles can scratch skin instead of polishing it. Much of that objection is about grade and pressure, so the sensible response is a finely milled powder in a cushioning cleansing base, used gently and rarely. This is a fine grade, though it is still a physical scrub, and the way you use it matters more than the ingredient list.

Ground shell is also what replaced plastic microbeads after the UK banned them from rinse-off cosmetics in 2018, which is why almost every physical scrub now uses a shell, a seed or a salt. Nothing in here absorbs, and there is no evidence that exfoliating the face or the scalp improves hair growth or helps a topical treatment get through. Anyone telling you a scrub unblocks follicles and lets hair out is selling you something.

Why it belongs here

Skin under treatment gets neglected, and the men in this range tend to have oily, congested or shaving-roughened skin on top of everything else. A polish twice a week keeps texture smooth and keeps a dull, coated look off the forehead and nose. Use it alongside the Face Cleanser, which stays the daily wash. If your skin is blemish-prone, a chemical exfoliant such as the Salicylic Acid Face Wash is the better choice, because salicylic acid works inside the pore and does not require you to rub anything over an inflamed spot. And if the flaking you are trying to sand off sits along the hairline and temples, that is barrier dryness from an alcohol-based topical, and the fix is the Ceramide Barrier Cream or the Face Hydration Cream rather than this.

How to use it

Twice a week at most, in the evening, after your usual cleanser.

  1. Wash first with your normal cleanser and leave your face damp rather than dripping. A scrub dragged over dry skin is far harsher than the same scrub on wet skin.
  2. Squeeze a strip about 2 cm long onto your fingertips, roughly 1 mL, for the whole face. At twice a week, one 100 mL tube lasts about a year.
  3. Warm it between your fingertips and work it in small circles for about thirty seconds, mostly across the forehead, nose and chin. Let the grains do the work and keep the pressure light. There is nothing to be gained by scrubbing harder or for longer.
  4. Stop at the hairline. Do not take it up into the scalp or across the temples if you are applying a topical treatment there.
  5. Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water and pat dry.
  6. Follow immediately with the Face Hydration Cream while your skin is still slightly damp.

Keep it away from treated skin and from anything that breaks the surface. Minoxidil labelling tells you not to apply it to skin that is broken, irritated or inflamed, because absorption through a damaged barrier can be higher than through intact skin. Exfoliating an area you then dose with Minoxidil Topical Solution is a change you did not intend to make to your dose. For the same reason, leave at least twenty-four hours either side of the Dermaroller, and never use both in one session. The other common mistake is frequency. Three or four times a week will strip the skin, and the tightness that follows feels like it needs more exfoliation when it needs less.

What to expect

The effect is cosmetic and immediate. Skin feels smoother the same evening, looks a little brighter for a day or two, and a shave the next morning goes more cleanly over polished skin. That is the entire benefit, and it fades in a few days, which is why it is a twice-weekly habit rather than a course of treatment. Nothing here builds up over months, nothing affects shedding or regrowth, and nothing in this tube will show up in a photograph of your hairline.

Warnings

For external use only. Avoid the eye area and rinse with water if it gets in. Patch test on the jaw before the first full use if your skin reacts easily. Do not use it on skin that is broken, sunburnt, inflamed or freshly needled, on active inflamed spots, or on the treated scalp. Stop using it if you develop redness, stinging or a rash that does not settle within a day. This is a cosmetic scrub and it is not a treatment for hair loss, acne or any skin condition. Keep out of reach of children.
