About this product
A minoxidil-free scalp serum built on three branded botanical complexes and 1% caffeine, in a 60 mL dropper. It is here for the people the rest of this range has nothing for: women, anyone whose scalp reacted badly to minoxidil, and anyone who is not ready to start a drug. The evidence behind these ingredients is a long way weaker than the evidence behind minoxidil, and the section below sets out exactly how much weaker.
What is in it
Redensyl 3%. A blend of a dihydroquercetin glucoside derived from larch and a stabilised green tea catechin, with glycine and zinc. The supplier's proposition is that it acts on stem cells in the outer root sheath and on the dermal papilla to move resting follicles back into a growth phase. The supporting clinical work is a single trial of around 26 men per arm, run over about six months by the company that sells the ingredient, and it has not been independently replicated.
Anagain 4%. Pea sprout extract, proposed to raise two signalling proteins, FGF7 and noggin, that are involved in starting a new growth phase. The human data is a small manufacturer study, roughly twenty people over three months, measuring the ratio of growing to resting hairs on a trichogram rather than what you would see in a mirror.
Baicapil 3%. Soy sprout, wheat microsprout and baicalin from Chinese skullcap. The evidence picture is the same again, small manufacturer-run studies at three months on trichogram measures.
Caffeine 1%. In laboratory work, caffeine reaches the follicle quickly and lingers there, and in cultured human follicles it has been shown to counteract testosterone-driven suppression of hair shaft growth. That is isolated tissue in a dish, and the human trial base is thin. The best known study used 0.2% caffeine, was open-label, and was funded by the company selling the caffeine product, so it is not a result to lean on.
Taken together: every active here has trials behind it, and almost every one of those trials was designed, funded and published by the company selling the ingredient. Those results still carry some weight, though they sit well below the standard minoxidil has met, and nothing on this page should be read as claiming otherwise.
Why it belongs here
Our 5% Minoxidil Topical Solution is labelled for men only, and a meaningful number of people who want to act on thinning either cannot use it or have tried it and could not tolerate the alcohol and propylene glycol. This serum is the option we are willing to sell those people, with its limits stated. It is also reasonable alongside minoxidil, as long as you understand that minoxidil is doing the heavy lifting.
If you want the same actives across a whole scalp rather than a defined thinning area, the Redensyl Scalp Spray covers ground faster in a fine-mist format. The Dermaroller 0.5 mm is the addition with the best supporting evidence in hair loss generally, although that evidence was gathered alongside minoxidil rather than alongside a botanical serum. For the wash step, the Anti-Hair Loss Shampoo is fragrance-free and will not undo anything you leave on the scalp.
How to use it
Use one full pipette, about 1 mL, twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening, every day.
- Start on a dry or towel-dried scalp. Water sitting on the skin thins the serum and carries it away from where you place it.
- Squeeze the bulb, draw the pipette full, roughly 1 mL.
- Part your hair into rows to expose the scalp across the thinning area.
- Place drops along each parting, a few at a time, until the millilitre is used, rather than emptying it into one spot.
- Massage it into the skin with your fingertips for about a minute.
- Leave it on the scalp without rinsing, and give it ten minutes to dry before you put on a hat, lie on a pillow or use any styling product.
- Wash your hands afterwards.
The common mistake is applying it to hair. This serum has to reach the skin to do anything at all, so part the hair and aim for scalp every time. If you also use a topical minoxidil, let the first application dry completely before the second goes on, or simply put this one on in the morning and the minoxidil at night. Never mix two topicals in one bottle.
What to expect
Expect nothing visible in the first month, and that is normal for this category. The studies behind these ingredients ran to three and six months and measured hair counts and growing-to-resting ratios under magnification, which are changes too small to read in a bathroom mirror at week four. Give it four months of consistent twice-daily use before you judge it, and six if you can.
Hair may feel slightly thicker and easier to handle sooner than that. That is the serum base and the caffeine sitting on the hair shaft, a cosmetic effect on the hair you already have rather than new growth. These ingredients have no reported early shedding phase of the kind minoxidil can cause, although that is the absence of a reported signal rather than a guarantee. It is also honest to say that this may produce no visible change for you at all, which is a more likely outcome here than it would be with minoxidil.
Warnings
For external use only, on the scalp. Avoid the eye area and rinse with cool water if it gets in. Stop using it if you develop irritation, redness or a rash.
Patch test before the first full application. This formula contains pea, soy and wheat derived extracts. If you have a known allergy to any of those, do not use it. Everyone else should apply a few drops to the inner forearm and leave it for 24 hours before going to the scalp.
Do not apply to broken, sunburnt, inflamed or infected skin. Speak to a doctor before starting if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, and see a doctor rather than buying a serum if your hair loss is sudden, patchy, painful or accompanied by scaling, since those can point to a condition that needs diagnosing.
This is a cosmetic product. It is not a medicine, it has no regulatory approval for hair loss, and it does not treat, cure or prevent hair loss as a medical condition.
Store below 25 degrees Celsius, away from direct sunlight, tightly closed. Keep out of reach of children.
