About this product
Rosemary leaf oil in a light carrier base, unscented, in a 50 mL dropper bottle. Rosemary is the ingredient men ask about most often when they would rather not use a drug, and the honest position is that it has one small comparative trial behind it and nothing approaching the evidence base minoxidil has. What an oil like this reliably does is settle a dry scalp and condition the hair shaft, which is worth having on its own terms.
What is in it
Rosemary leaf oil, diluted in a carrier rather than applied neat, because undiluted essential oil on the scalp is a dependable way to give yourself irritation.
The evidence comes down to one randomised trial published in 2015, which compared rosemary oil with 2% minoxidil in men with androgenetic alopecia over six months and found similar hair counts in the two groups at the end, with more scalp itching reported in the rosemary group. That result is worth reading carefully. There was no placebo arm, so it cannot separate the oil from six months of daily attention to the scalp. The comparator was the 2% strength, which is the weaker of the two minoxidil concentrations and half of what we sell. Nobody has repeated the trial since.
There is also laboratory and animal work suggesting rosemary extract interferes with 5-alpha-reductase and improves circulation at the skin surface. That is a long way from a demonstrated effect on a human head. Treat rosemary as a plausible ingredient on thin evidence, and do not read the 2015 trial as putting it on a level with the drug.
Why it belongs here
This sits at the supportive end of the range. If density is what you care about, the evidence points at the Minoxidil Topical Solution, 5%, and an oil does not substitute for it. Where this genuinely earns its place is on a scalp that has gone dry, tight and flaky after months of an alcohol-based topical, and on hair that snaps along the mid-lengths before it ever reaches a length worth having. It is also the sensible option for a man who has decided against a drug and wants to give rosemary a proper trial on a schedule he will actually keep. If you would rather have rosemary in a form that stays on the scalp and never needs washing out, the Rosemary Peptide Serum is the leave-on version.
How to use it
Once a week as a pre-wash mask, or nightly on the scalp if you are not using a topical treatment.
The weekly mask, about 1 mL.
- Work on dry, unwashed hair. Oil spreads further on a dry scalp, and water sitting on the skin keeps it from settling.
- Part your hair into rows and place about 1 mL, roughly one full dropper, along the partings across the area you are treating. Use up to 2 mL if you are covering the whole scalp and the lengths as well.
- Massage it in with the pads of your fingers for a minute or two, keeping your nails off the skin.
- Leave it on for at least thirty minutes. Overnight is fine on an old pillowcase, though it achieves little more than an hour does.
- Shampoo it out, twice if the first wash leaves the roots heavy. The Rosemary & Onion Growth Shampoo clears it without stripping.
- Let your scalp dry completely before any leave-on treatment goes back on.
The nightly version, about 0.5 mL. If you are not using a topical and want rosemary on the scalp more often than once a week, work roughly half a dropper into the scalp in the evening, on the scalp only and off the lengths, for a minute with the pads of your fingers. Wash it out on your usual wash days, every second or third morning. Keep the amount down. A nightly dose the size of the weekly mask will leave the hair greasy and take two shampoos to clear.
The mistake worth avoiding. Do not layer this over or underneath a minoxidil dose. An oil film sitting on the scalp is unlikely to help a topical get where it is going, and washing the oil out an hour or two after a dose throws that dose away. Keep the oil to a wash day and apply your topical once everything is dry.
What to expect
The cosmetic part is immediate. The scalp feels less tight from the first application, and the hair is softer and easier to comb once the oil is washed out. Over a few weeks of regular use you should see less flaking and less breakage in the comb. That is a real result, and it is the part of this product you can reasonably expect.
Density is a different question on a much longer clock. The one trial that exists ran for six months and did not find its change until the six-month mark, so if density is why you are buying it, give it six months and judge it against photographs taken in the same light, because memory is a poor judge of a slow change. It may do nothing at all for your density. That outcome is common enough to plan for, and it is the reason this oil costs what it does and sits where it does in the range.
Warnings
For external use only. This is a cosmetic scalp and hair oil and it is no treatment for hair loss as a medical condition.
Rosemary belongs to the mint family and is a recognised contact allergen, so patch test before the first full application. Put a drop on the inner forearm, leave it twenty-four hours, and do not use the oil if you get redness or itching. Stop using it if irritation or a rash develops later.
Keep it away from the eyes. Oil is harder to flush out than a water-based product, so rinse with plenty of lukewarm water and expect a few minutes of blurring. Do not apply it to skin that is broken, inflamed, irritated or infected.
Do not use it on a day you have microneedled. Published case reports describe granulomatous and hypersensitivity reactions to topical products carried into the skin through fresh needle channels, and essential oils are named among them. Leave at least twenty-four hours after the Dermaroller 0.5 mm before any oil goes on.
Store away from direct sunlight and heat, tightly closed. Keep out of reach of children.
