About this product

A daily leave-on scalp serum with rosemary, caffeine, peptides and biotin, in a 60 mL dropper. It sits at the cosmetic end of this range, and the honest reason it exists is that most men want a second thing to do for a thinning scalp alongside the one drug that has real regrowth evidence behind it. None of the four ingredients here comes close to minoxidil for proof, and what follows sets out how thin each one actually is.

What is in it

Rosemary. The evidence people cite is a single randomised trial from 2015, which put rosemary oil against 2% minoxidil in 100 men over six months. Both groups had measurably more hair at the end, with no significant difference between them, and the rosemary group reported less scalp itching. That is one trial, at one centre, with no placebo group, against a strength of minoxidil half the one we sell. It also used a diluted essential oil applied on its own, which is a different thing from rosemary in a cosmetic serum, so read it as a reason to be interested rather than as a result you should expect.

Caffeine. Caffeine does reach the follicle and linger there, which penetration studies have measured. In human follicles kept alive in a dish it offsets testosterone's suppression of hair shaft growth at very low concentrations, though what a dish shows and what a living scalp does are different questions. The study usually quoted, in which 0.2% caffeine performed no worse than 5% minoxidil over six months, was open-label, funded by the ingredient's manufacturer with company staff among the authors, and counted anagen hairs by trichogram rather than measuring density. That is a long way from showing the two are equivalent, and nothing published shows that adding caffeine on top of minoxidil improves the outcome.

Peptides. The short signalling peptides used in scalp serums are supported almost entirely by studies run by the companies that sell the ingredients, usually on small numbers and usually never published in full. They are here because the mechanism is plausible and they are well tolerated, and the independent evidence to back them up does not yet exist.

Biotin. Taken by mouth, biotin helps people who are genuinely deficient, and deficiency is uncommon in anyone eating normally. Reviews in 2017 and 2024 both concluded there is no good evidence it grows hair in people who are not deficient, and the one double-blind placebo-controlled trial found no difference. Applied to the scalp it has less evidence again. It is in the formula as a conditioning ingredient, and it is fair to judge it on how your hair feels rather than on anything it does to a follicle.

Why it belongs here

This is the serum for someone early in thinning who wants a daily step that is easy to keep up, and for someone who has decided against a drug and would rather do something cosmetic than nothing. If regrowth is what you are actually after, the honest recommendation is Minoxidil Topical Solution, the only thing in this range with strong evidence behind it, and the serum can sit alongside it as the other daily habit. It overlaps heavily with the Caffeine Scalp Serum, so choose one of the two rather than layering both. The Rosemary & Onion Growth Shampoo is the matching wash, and Rosemary Hair Growth Oil is the heavier weekly version of the same idea if you would rather use something you rinse out.

How to use it

Once a day, on a dry scalp, morning or night.

  1. Start with a dry or towel-dried scalp. Soaking wet hair spreads the serum through the lengths instead of leaving it on the skin, which is where you want it.
  2. Squeeze the bulb and fill the pipette to roughly 1 mL, which is about one full dropper for the whole scalp.
  3. Part your hair into rows across the thinning area and place five or six drops along each parting, rather than emptying the dropper into one spot.
  4. Massage it in with your fingertips for about thirty seconds. It should wet the skin without running down your neck.
  5. Leave it in and do not rinse. It absorbs in ten to fifteen minutes, so allow that before a hat, a pillow or any styling product.
  6. Wash your hands afterwards.

If you also use minoxidil, keep the two apart. Put the serum in whichever slot the minoxidil dose does not occupy, or leave at least two hours between them. Layering a second product straight onto a wet minoxidil dose dilutes it and moves it around, and the drug is the part of your routine worth protecting.

What to expect

The hair already on your head has finished growing, so the quickest changes you will notice are in comfort and feel. An itchy scalp usually settles within a week or two, and hair tends to sit slightly fuller from the conditioning ingredients almost straight away. That part is cosmetic and it is real.

Density is a slower and far less certain question. In the rosemary trial nothing measurable had happened at three months and the change appeared at six, so six months is the earliest point at which it is worth judging. Photograph the same area in the same light at the start and once a month afterwards, because gradual change is close to impossible to see in a mirror. Be prepared for the answer to be that your density looks the same. This is a cosmetic product and it may do nothing at all for the amount of hair you have.

Warnings

For external use only, and for the scalp rather than the face. Avoid the eye area and rinse with cool water if it gets in. Patch test before the first full application, because rosemary is a botanical extract and botanicals are among the more common causes of contact allergy. Put a drop behind your ear or on your inner forearm and leave it for twenty-four hours.

Do not apply it to a scalp that is broken, sunburnt, inflamed, infected or painful. Do not use it immediately after microneedling. Published case reports describe granulomatous and hypersensitivity reactions when topical products are introduced into fresh microchannels, and peptide serums are named specifically among them, so if you use the Dermaroller, leave the scalp alone for twenty-four hours afterwards.

This is a cosmetic product and it does not treat, cure or prevent hair loss. If your hair loss is sudden, patchy or unexplained, see a doctor rather than starting a serum, because those patterns can have causes worth diagnosing. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, check with a doctor first, since rosemary oil is one of the botanicals usually avoided. Stop using it if you develop irritation or a rash. Keep out of reach of children.
